It does not matter whether you are young or old when trying to pass you driving test for the first time. It is still a very stressful time for most of us which can lead to all kinds of mistakes just from the stress. So why make things worse by not being aware of the common mistakes that you may make. Have a look the common problems below and it should help you on that dreaded day.

  • Not Studying all the Signs:  A lot of people seem to assume they know the road signs enough already and (at least in my area) focus on the actual driving. Of course improving your driving skill is extremely important but do not assume you know enough to pass the theory test. You may know the common signs but more often than not, the examiners will throw some more unusual signs into the theory test which can really cause problems. Try doing mini exams with a friend or member of your family at regular times before the test.
  • Changing Lanes:   Another common problem is not checking your blind spot when changing lanes on the test. Also not gauging the speed of other traffic can get you into trouble as well. For example, if you change lanes far too close to a vehicle behind you, causing that vehicle to have to brake will almost certainly give you some negative points or even a full fail.
  • Speed on Entering Major Roads:  You will probably be asked to drive on a major multi-lane road. A common problem is the speed where you may be driving too slow when first entering the major road. Try to get up to the correct speed to match the existing traffic.
  • Speeding:  I know this sounds silly and it must surely be one of the most obvious things that you should not do on a driving test or indeed after the test but quite a lot of people speed on the test. I think the reason is because they are so nervous that they simply forget to check the speed.
  • Hesitating:  For the more careful or nervous types of people, this can really cause problems on the test. If you keep waiting a long time before taking an action such as joining a roundabout or turning at a junction then this can cause a problem. It shouldn't fail you if you hesitate a few times but if the examiner sees you hesitating very often it may be enough to add up to a fail.
